What happens during your pet's physiotherapy session?

Our physiotherapy appointments usually involve four steps.

01

Assess

We'll review how your pet moves, taking their condition and previous medical issues into account.

02

Treat

We'll use a hands-on approach, including manual therapies such as massage, soft tissue and joint mobilisation, alongside therapeutic exercises tailored to your pet's needs.

Where appropriate, other treatments such as electrotherapy may also be used.

03

Learn

You stay with your pet throughout the appointment. We'll explain what we're doing and show you how you can support their rehabilitation at home.

04

Continue at home

We'll give you exercises to continue between sessions, helping you stay involved in your pet's progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is veterinary physiotherapy?

Veterinary physiotherapy is a type of therapy that uses physical techniques and exercises to help improve your pet’s mobility and manage pain.

It’s a hands-on approach and techniques can include massage, stretching, joint mobilisations, and controlled exercises such as balance work and strengthening exercises.

How do I know if my pet needs physiotherapy?

Your pet may benefit from physiotherapy if they have a sudden change in movements, their behaviour has changed or they’ve stopped enjoying doing the things they once loved.

They may be displaying signs of stiffness, find getting up more difficult or showing a reluctance to walk.

If they have had surgery, have recently been injured or they’ve just been diagnosed with a condition such as arthritis, physiotherapy may be a type of treatment we would recommend.

How much does pet physiotherapy cost?

Our initial physiotherapy consultation costs £99 for 60 minutes, with follow-up sessions costing £69 for 40 minutes.

We are offering an introductory deal of 10% discount if you book four sessions in October.

How long does a physiotherapy session take?

Your initial consultation lasts 60 minutes, while follow-up appointments are 40 minutes.

The first appointment includes an assessment of your pet and their individual needs, while follow-up sessions are tailored to their progress.

How many physiotherapy sessions will my pet need?

The number of sessions will be recommended after your pet has been assessed. Treatment is tailored to the individual patient and that session frequency will be adjusted depending on their progress.

Do I need a referral from my vet?

Yes, our physiotherapy sessions can only be carried out under veterinary referral. So they will need to be examined and then prescribed physiotherapy before we begin.

If you’re unsure what you need before booking, speak to our team and we’ll be happy to advise.

Do I need to be an existing Natural Vet customer?

No. You don’t need to be an existing Natural Vet customer, although your pet will need to have been examined by a veterinary surgeon as required before remedial physiotherapy can take place. The examination does not need to be at The Natural Vet, we will just require a referral from your general practice before we can begin any treatment.

Will physiotherapy hurt or stress my pet?

At The Natural Vet we practice a fear-free approach and consent-based treatment.

We’ll work with your pet on an individual basis, and will ensure we do not cause any unnecessary stress.

We also work within your pet’s tolerance levels, so will not carry out any techniques that cause pain.

You’ll be able to stay with your pet throughout their appointment, so you can be there to give them comfort and reassure them.

Can physiotherapy be combined with other treatments?

Yes, physiotherapy can be used as a standalone treatment or can be used in combination with other treatment modalities.

While physiotherapy aims to reduce pain and inflammation, some patients may require conventional pain relief alongside this.

Physiotherapy can be beneficial alongside treatments such as laser therapy and acupuncture.

Can you provide physiotherapy at home?

We don’t currently offer home visits. Our pet physiotherapy service is provided at our veterinary practice in Thornliebank, Glasgow.

What happens after my physiotherapy sessions finish?

This will depend on how your pet has responded to the therapy and what their condition was like beforehand.

We’ve treated some pets that have only needed a short course but others have needed more long term support. We’ll put together your plan and advise on what to do once your sessions have ended.

What happens if my pet doesn't improve?

We will assess your pet at each session to highlight any areas of improvement or concern.

If your pet is not progressing as expected, we may refer them back to their veterinary surgeon to discuss other treatment options or further investigations.

We will also send regular reports to your first opinion vet to keep them updated on the pet’s condition and progress.
